How a Dermatologist Can Help You Manage Your Psoriasis

You have heard the advertising phrase, "the heartbreak of psoriasis." Frankly, it's no exaggeration because people with this chronic skin condition feel very embarrassed by their obvious and painful patches of flaky, red skin. At Lone Star State Dermatology Clinic in San Antonio, TX and serving the Live Oak area, Dr. Jean-Denis Boucher diagnoses and treats psoriasis.

Just what is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a skin problem related to a deficiency in the immune system. Characterized by cyclical outbreaks, psoriatic lesions are thick, scaly, red, itchy and very uncomfortable.

Strangely, the body overproduces normal skin cells quickly and in great quantity, creating plaques that are crusty and can cause embarrassment. They tend to appear on very obvious parts of the body such as the elbows, arms, knees, lower back and scalp. Some lesions become so large that their margins join together into one big scaly area.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says that expert diagnosis and treatment from a board-certified dermatologist, such as Dr. Boucher, is the most reliable way to control psoriasis.

Possible treatments for psoriasis

While there is no real cure for psoriasis, there are many ways to manage it successfully. Come to Lone Star State Dermatology Clinic for a complete skin exam by Dr. Boucher. While visual inspection is helpful in diagnosis, your skin doctor also may take a tissue sample for analysis with a microscope to determine if your lesions truly are psoriasis.

If they are, he may recommend some of the following interventions:

  • Topical creams and ointments to reduce inflammation, redness and itching
  • Stress reduction
  • Oral medications to slow skin cell production
  • Laser therapy to reduce or stop scaling
  • Salicylic acid and coal tar preparations
