Laser Hair Removal Q & A

by Jean-Denis Boucher, MD, FAAD

What are IPL treatments?

Intense pulsed light is a technology that uses high-powered, broad-spectrum flashes of light to address a variety of aesthetic concerns, including the removal of unwanted body hair.

The intense pulses of light target specific structures, such as the melanin in your hair, and heats them to destruction. Your body then reabsorbs the particles.

Dr. Boucher uses a handheld device which emits flashes of light over your skin. You may experience a stinging or tingling sensation during the treatment.

IPL treatments will not permanently remove body hair, but they will permanently reduce the growth of hair, especially dark, coarse hairs on your legs, back, and bikini area. IPL treatments take 10-30 minutes, depending on the area Dr. Boucher treats.

How many IPL treatments will I need?

Hair follicles go through cycles of growth. Only active follicles are affected by IPL treatments. When dormant follicles cycle back into the growth phase, you will need another IPL treatment.

Dr. Boucher performs a physical exam to determine the number of treatments you need, based on your hair’s condition and your skin type. Typically, he recommends 8-10 treatments to remove visible hair. Dr. Boucher may suggest routine treatments to efficiently control hair growth, with treatment sessions conducted 4-6 weeks apart.

Am I a good candidate for IPL hair removal?

Dr. Boucher reviews your medical history to determine if IPL hair removal treatments are right for you. He may not recommend IPL treatments if you have particular medical concerns, take specific medications, or have skin conditions that can be complicated by IPL treatments.

IPL treatments may not work as effectively for people with light-colored or red hair because of the lack of melanin in the hair follicle.

What are the benefits of IPL treatments?

Once you start IPL treatments, you’ll save time and energy not having to shave as frequently. The treatment destroys the root of the hair, keeping it from regrowing. Over time, you will require fewer treatments while enjoying more effective results.

Dr. Boucher performs IPL treatments in a comfortable office setting. While not painless, IPL treatments are less painful than other methods of hair removal like electrolysis and waxing.
